was born in 1919 in Yonkers, New York. Visibly “in the American grain”, he remains pre-eminent in American letters as poet, translator, publisher, playwright and patron saint. His humanistic radicalism lit the Beat Generation. Least we forget: he was a commanding officer during the Normandy invasion and received a doctorate from the Sorbonne. In 1958, A Coney Island of the Mind brought recognition and immense sales, providing a fluid landscape for Ferlinghetti’s major themes: “anarchy, mass corruption, engagement, and a belief in the surreality and wonder of life”. A Far Rockaway of the Heart (1997) and Loud Prayer (Torst, 1998) are his most recent collections of poems. |

Narodil se v roce 1919 v Yonkers, ve státě
New York. Je jednou z nejvýznačnějších a nejtypičtějších osobností americké
literatury; básník, překladatel, dramatik, nakladatel a „anděl strážný“.
Svým radikálním humanismem podnítil tzv. beatnickou generaci. Za války
byl velícím důstojníkem při invazi spojenců v Normandii
a získal doktorát na Sorbonně. V roce 1958 mu báseň Lunapark v hlavě přinesla okamžité uznání a slávu a objevují se zde také jeho hlavní témata: „anarchie, kritika masové korupce, angažovanost a víra v surrealitu a zázračnost života“. Jeho nejnovější sbírky jsou A Far Rockaway of the Heart (1997) a Hlasitá modlitba (Torst, 1998). |
